The Bereavement Counselor will Provide individual, family and group counseling to hospice survivors for up to thirteen months following the death of a hospice patient. Provide information/education related to the grief process to the survivor and community referrals as needed. Consultation regarding the bereavement program or aspects of the grief process may also be provided to the community.

Sharp Hospice Care is dedicated to providing comprehensive care and compassionate support to individuals facing life-limiting illnesses, along with their families and friends.  Services range from relief of physical discomfort to emotional and spiritual support.  Sharp Hospice Care also provides “pre-hospice” home based palliative care consultation for patients with advanced illness such as heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and dementia. Sharp Hospice Care is part of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, nationally recognized as a MAGNET®-designated hospital for patient care and nursing practices.  Sharp Hospice Care provides in-home services and also provides the region’s first freestanding hospice homes, Lake View Home in La Mesa and Park View Home in Del Cerro, which offer end-of-life patients an alternative to nursing home placement.  The homes – staffed 24 hours a day by licensed nurses – provide a comfortable and supportive environment for up to four patients at one time in each home.  Sharp Hospice Care Administration Offices are located at 8881 Fletcher Parkway in La Mesa
This position may also involve travel to different sites in San Diego County providing bereavement counseling services to family members in their own place of residence.
4-hour to 8-hour day shift between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; no weekends
This is a Per Diem position
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Master's degree in social work, counseling or psychology (MSW, MFT or MA)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification for Health Care Providers issued by the American Heart Association
  • Current California Driver's License and Driver's Insurance
  • Bilingual English/Spanish as individual will be serving Spanish speaking families of patients who were on Sharp HospiceCare
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
  • Current California Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (LMFT) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
  • Two years counseling experience
  • Hospice and bereavement experience
