Career Path

The mission of the Laboratory Education program is to educate laboratorians in accordance with the highest professional standards; provide them with skills and knowledge enabling them to provide excellence in patient care; and stimulate and promote lifelong learning.

This education is offered to clinical laboratory scientists and phlebotomists to help them enhance their skills while earning CEUs. Training courses and seminars are offered throughout the year on laboratory topics such as phlebotomy, safety, microbiology, hematology, chemistry and pathology.

Job Details

Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Scientist  will be responsible for pre-analytic and post-analytic testing in Hematology, Coagulation, Chemistry/Urinalysis, Blood Bank and some Microbiology.  Assists in overseeing work activities performed by Medical Lab Technicians, Certified Phlebotomy Technicians and Lab Assistants.

Sharp Grossmont Laboratory is a large state-of-the-art clinical laboratory that supports a 536-bed hospital with Oncology, Women’s Services, Behavioral Health and the busiest emergency department in San Diego.   Lab disciplines include Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Pathology and Blood Bank.  The laboratory has an extensive Outreach program that is supported by three outpatient service centers.   Our leadership team promotes wellness, real time reward & recognition, professional growth, flexible scheduling and work/life balance.   We are proud to have a team of very committed and highly performing employees!  We have empowered our team to create innovative ways of providing patient-centered care, such as incorporating aromatherapy and hand massage into our practice to create a healing environment for our Phlebotomy patients.  These innovative services have received numerous awards from our organization and Planetree.   Take your career to the next level with Sharp HealthCare’s Clinical Lab Services!

Sharp Grossmont Hospital is the largest not-for-profit, full-service acute care hospital in the region with 536-beds. The hospital has outstanding programs in heart care, orthopedics, rehabilitation, robotic surgery, mental health, stroke care and women’s health. In addition, the hospital’s Emergency and Critical Care Center is one of the most technologically advanced emergency and intensive care facilities in the nation.

Location
This position is located in La Mesa, San Diego County

Hours
Full-Time (1.0) Position. 8-hour day shift with variable start times between 5:00 am - 7:00 am; including every other weekend

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Education as required for California CLS or CLS specialty licensure
  • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist Generalist license
  • Must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Must be detail-oriented and comfortable with technology
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities is essential

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • National Certification as MLS (ASCP) or MT (ASCP)
  • One year recent Generalist Clinical Laboratory CLS experience
