Position Summary

Coordinates all registration functions necessary to ensure the processing of a clean claim including but not limited to obtaining and processing patient demographics, visit and financial information in a manner that facilitate maximum financial reimbursement and promotes premier customer service.

This role utilizes Patient Secure to identify the accurate patient medical record while adhering to EMTALA regulations and performs face-to-face interviews directly with patients and/or their designated representatives. Accurate identification and delivery of regulatory documents and securing patient financial responsibility is a key responsibility.

Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns is a nationally recognized, full-service Women's Hospital with approximately 8,500 deliveries per year and is part of the Sharp HealthCare system, which won the 2007 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.  In 2013 the hospital earned Prominent Designation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery.  Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns provides a full range of medical and surgical services for women of all ages, including robotic gynecologic surgery and oncology and is San Diego's only hospital dedicated to women's care.  It is nationally recognized for its care of expectant mothers and delivering babies, as well as its Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – the largest in Southern California. Other services include Operating Room suites and PACU, Mother/Infant Services, Women’s Acute Care, and the Perinatal Special Care Unit with centralized monitoring specializing in high-risk antepartum care. 


This position is located in Serra Mesa, San Diego County


Hours:   Per Diem position -  to meet business needs - individual must be available to work all shifts, nocturnal , evening shift, weekends, holidays.



Required Skills and Qualifications:


  • Minimum two years’ experience in a medical business service setting.
  • Must have experience communicating effectively both verbally and in writing professionally.


Preferred Skills and Qualifications: 


  • Experience communicating and discussing personal and financial matters with patients and/or their representatives.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the following is preferred: medical terminology, medical insurances, collection guidelines and criteria; Local, State and Federal regulations regarding registration/billing and funding functions such as TJC, Title XXII, Medicare Important Message, Medicare Secondary Payor, Tricare Third Party Liability; Auto Accident and Work Comp, Medicare/Outpatient Observation Notice.

  • CPT and ICD10 coding knowledge.

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

  • HFMA certifications. 

  • Bilingual - English/Spanish
