Responsibilities

Summary
The Chemical Dependency Counselor provides group, individual, and family therapy for patients in the Outpatient Specialty programs. Assesses and evaluates the psychosocial needs of the patient and family to determine treatment goals and interventions. Maintains a safe and therapeutic environment for patients.
The Social Services Department provides a wide range of services to patients and their families. The department consists of Social Workers, Discharge Planners, Chemical Dependency Counselors and social work interns. Social Workers are part of the treatment team and work in collaboration with nurses, psychiatrists, pharmacists, recreational therapists and dieticians to ensure that every patient receives the best care possible.
As the largest behavioral health care provider in San Diego with 149 beds, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital provides a full range of programs to people of all ages including children, adolescents, adults and seniors challenged by depression, substance abuse or serious mental illness. The hospital’s robust Clinical Research Program has conducted more than 250 clinical trials of investigational medications since its inception in 1963, providing new options and hope for people with mental illness.
Sharp Mesa Vista provides inpatient care and offers outpatient programs throughout the community.
Location
This position is located in Serra Mesa, San Diego County 
 
Hours
8-hour day shift; including weekends as needed
This is a Per Diem position
 
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • Knowledge of chemical dependency, psychiatric disorders, and basic psychopharmacology
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience using individual, family and group treatment modalities
 
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in psychology, counseling, social work, or related field
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for Health Care Providers
  • Experience facilitating substance abuse treatment groups
  • Experience utilizing a psychosocial rehabilitation model
  • Experience working in hospital setting
