Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is a 343-bed hospital with the largest array of health care services in San Diego's South Bay. A Designated Planetree Person-Centered Care Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista is home to the region's most comprehensive heart program and as well as offering exceptional services for orthopedic care and women and infants. The Douglas & Nancy Barnhart Cancer Center offers patients the most advanced treatment technology, a unique healing environment and an extraordinary level of care.

Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center has been providing health care to San Diego's South Bay community for more than 70 years.Now we are on a journey to go beyond, building a next-generation hospital in our binational region. The new hospital tower at Sharp Chula Vista will combine clinical excellence with thoughtful consideration to provide the best level of care to the community we're privileged to serve. Scheduled to open in 2019, the new Hospital Tower at Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center will be the first new Sharp hospital in San Diego’s South Bay in more than 40 years. The tower will include seven stories, a 197,000-square-foot hospital.

As part of Planetree designation, the new hospital will include:

All-private patient rooms designed with safety and privacy as priorities, including 10 intensive-care suites

6 operating rooms (including 1 hybrid Operating Room)

Redesigned main entrance and lobby

Rooftop café with indoor/outdoor dining with panoramic ocean views

Additional space for support services including a pharmacy and kitchen

On the main floors, patients will receive quality care in large, private rooms; a new-intensive care unit will feature high-tech suites for lifesaving care. In our spacious, new operating rooms, surgeons will perform cutting-edge procedures for cardiology, radiology and more.A versatile hybrid operating room will be able to shift quickly from a catheterization procedure to surgery.Located at the top of the hospital will be an indoor/outdoor café will feature panoramic views, from the ocean to the mountains.

Chief Medical Officer - Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center


Chief Medical Officer will serve as a member of the executive team with primary functions to include:

  • Acting as the liaison for operational issues impacting the medical staff.

  • Focusing on aligning and engaging medical staff in efforts to deliver the highest standard of medical care.

  • Participates in executive and board of directors meetings to provide physician presence and input into the strategic and operational discussions and deliberations

  • Participating in development and implementation of systems and processes that ensure the highest quality of patient care, safety, and evidence based care across all disciplines and the hospital

  • Providing medical perspective to strategic and operational planning

  • Advising on and representing related medical issues at the hospital and corporate levels

  • representing the hospital in a professional, competent manner in the community, state, region and nation

  • Providing leadership and accountability in achieving system and hospital vision, financial and operational goals and targets.

  • Ensuring an organized, multidisciplinary team approach for both inpatient and outpatient general acute care services at SCVMC.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 15 years of experience as a leader in medical staff functions (Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center preferred), and/or service line(s).


  • Minimum requirement of Doctor of Medicine and 15 years experience in hands-on clinical medicine.

  • Advanced degree such as MBA or MPH is preferred


  • Licensed to practice Medicine in the state of California

  • Board certification in Internal Medicine recommended; board certification in a given specialty is required.


Key Responsibilities:


  • Provides leadership in all aspects of ensuring quality care.

  • Collaborates with the leadership team to ensure that each patient perceives their hospital experience as Very Good (“5” on Press Ganey or “9+10” on the HCAHPS scale).

  • Establishes and maintains a collaborative working relationship with the medical, nursing and administrative staff in hospital and throughout system.

  • Collaborates with CEO and leadership team on strategic planning, program and department goal setting.

  • Provides support to the Vice President of Nursing for all research activities conducted in the hospital.

  • Represents SCVMC and Sharp Healthcare at appropriate professional organizations.

  • Represents SCVMC and Sharp HealthCare at conferences and to the press for program coordination and  for legislative advocacy at the local, state and national level.

  • Provides professional education for physicians, nurses and support personnel.

  • Serves as a spokesperson for SCVMC as appropriate and/or necessary.

  • Commitment to the Sharp Health Care Experience practices and abides by the ethical standards set in the Sharp Health Care Commitment to Principles Handbook.


Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:


  • Knowledge of hospital operations, delivery of medical and surgical care in the outpatient and inpatient setting.

  • Knowledge of the role of quality and utilization review:

    • Familiarity with geometric mean LOS
    • Disease severity
    • Case mix index
    • Milliman and Interqual criteria for delivery of care
    • MS-DRG coding and documentation requirements
  • Skilled in conflict management resolution.

  • Familiarity with PC based, server computer operations

  • Knowledge of general systems theory; organizational and administrative theory and research; social, behavioral and political science; nursing science and health care organization/hospital administration. 

  • Demonstrates effective group process skills; ability to organize and direct others; ability to work collaboratively with medical staff, nurses, and Sharp HealthCare administration.

  • Ability to handle politically sensitive situations with tact and demeanor

  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills. 

  • Highly respected clinician with ability to relate to and engage the clinical population.

The position provides a very competitive compensation, including opportunity to participate in a management bonus incentive program along with a generous benefit package.
