Required Skills and Qualifications
- Masters or doctoral prepared Registered Nurse
- Current unencumbered California Registered Nurse license
- Certification as Clinical Nurse Specialist by California Board of Registered Nursing
- Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers
- Current ACLS
- 3-5 years of critical care nursing experience
- Ability to work independently and interact with a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals
- Successful project management and computer skills
- Attention to detail and excellent customer service skills
- Excellent communication skills and an ability to lead change and influence others
Preferred Skills and Qualifications
- 1 to 2 years’ experience as a CNS
- Advanced certification CCRN or CCNS
The SICU Clinical Nurse Specialist is an advanced practice nurse who will provide leadership to promote excellence in nursing practice and patient outcomes. The CNS is a masters or doctoral prepared RN who applies clinical expertise in evidence-based nursing practice within three spheres of influence; 1) patient/client, 2) nurses/nursing practice, and 3) organization/system in the following roles: clinical expert, educator, researcher, consultant and leader. The CNS recommends and sets the standard for professional nursing practice, establishes appropriate patient care measures and evaluates outcomes.
Role responsibilities include supporting a collaborative practice culture with emphasis on safety, patient-centered care, communication, accountability, shared decision making, nursing education, and evidence-based practice while recognizing the value and meaning of nursing’s contribution within an interdisciplinary model and demonstrating active participation in nursing research at the hospital, department and/or unit level. Facilitates the use of new knowledge gained through nursing research. Promotes nursing research at the unit-level including education of the unit staff and facilitation of staff-level research involvement.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist will facilitate professional growth of staff throughout the continuum including orientation process, ongoing competency validation, development of advanced clinicians and preceptors, promotion professional certification and on-going education for staff and participate in performance improvement activities, as determined by quality outcome data, strategic planning, or best practice identification. The CNS also incorporates current standards into practice documents (policies and procedures, guidelines of care, order sets, etc.) to ensure unit practice is evidence-based and includes principles of role competence.
The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Sharp Memorial Hospital is an intense and fast moving 24-bed unit. Our primary patient populations are cardiac surgical, major trauma and complex general surgical. We also provide care for a number of patients with a variety of different mechanical assist devices.
