Director Emergency Management Services – Sharp Memorial Hospital


Director Emergency Management Services provides leadership and operational direction for multi-functional clinical areas for Sharp Memorial Hospital (SMH).This position is accountable for planning, directing, and coordinating the operations of the multi-functional clinical areas for the Emergency Management Services.

The Director will work collaboratively with SMH leaders to promote and ensure ongoing systems integration, coordination, continuity and consistency of patient care services across the Sharp Memorial Hospital.This position is subject to functional policies and goals, and has discretion to establish plans and recommend policies and priorities, provided activities are consistent with integration objectives, and operating policies.

The Emergency and Trauma Center, the largest and most modern in San Diego is designed to reduce stress and waiting time. By increasing the size of treatment and waiting areas by nearly 300 percent, patients and families have a more comfortable emergency experience. As one of five adult trauma centers in San Diego County, the new center has 52 beds, including 4 trauma beds to serve the community. Sharp Memorial Hospital becomes first in San Diego to receive prestigious ‘Lantern’ Award for Emergency Services. The Lantern Award, bestowed by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA), recognizes emergency departments that exemplify exceptional and innovative performance in the core areas of leadership, practice, education, advocacy and research.

Sharp Memorial Hospital — the first hospital in San Diego with all private patient rooms — is dedicated to providing the highest-quality, patient-centered care and consists of 368 beds.

Sharp Memorial is known for outstanding programs in cardiac and vascular care, cancer treatment, orthopedic and neurological services, rehabilitation, robotic surgery and multi-organ transplantation, and has been recognized as a MAGNET®-designated hospital for nursing excellence and is also designated as a Person-Centered Care Hospital by Planetree, an organization committed to personalizing, humanizing, and demystifying the hospital experience for patients and their families.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five (5) years management experience (or equivalent).
  • Requires a seasoned professional skilled and knowledgeable with applicable work experience in a field(s) of specialization (emergency, trauma, acute care or critical care, etc.
  • Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and a Master’s degree in a healthcare related field is required.


    • Current unencumbered California RN license.

    • Any one of the following certifications preferred TNCC, PALS or CEN.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Directs the strategic planning process for assigned areas of the specific entity (region).

  • Determines direction, goals, and objectives of assigned areas and ensures implementation of strategic and operating plans.  Directs the development of short and long range plans and budgets for SMH Emergency Management Services and other assigned areas of responsibility. 

  • Develops and recommends overall organizational policies and objectives within functional area(s), and ensures their implementation for SMH. 


  • Directs management of operations to ensure the highest quality of care and service is provided to patients and promotes cost effective delivery of health care services

  • In conjunction with the peer Directors for Acute Care and Critical Care Services, ensures that the integration and system coordination of all aspects of the functional clinical area(s) including collaboration to optimize patient throughput.

  • Utilizes systematic methods of resolving problems and institutes corrective action.

  • Utilizes the concept of change theory.

  • Manages contract services, and/or outside relationships relating to daily operations and emergency management services. 

  • Communicates and ensures that entity processes are developed and implemented to ensure that entity stakeholders/constituents needs are met.


  • Ensures organizational compliance with legislation and regulations as they impact assigned areas. 

  • Responsible for ensuring ongoing problem identification and problem-solving for the assigned areas and diffuses any crisis issue through proactive and strategic decision making processes.    


  • Achieves financial outcomes and targets goals for system efficiency.

  • Sustainability – in collaboration with stakeholders, identify strategic business focus, growth, using integrated and competitor information about customers, market to develop and recommend strategic opportunities.

  • Recognizes and initiates opportunities for improvement in the financial performance of the unit/department.

  • Develops new area of expertise in the area of financial competency.

  • Exceptional oral and written skills.

  • Ability to exercise sound judgment in business decisions and to critically analyze and problem-solve complex and global issues, as well as manage solutions at a detailed level.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and exercises confidentiality of issues affecting business issues of the respective entity.


Compensation and Benefits:

The position provides a very competitive compensation, including opportunity to participate in a management bonus incentive program along with a generous benefit package.
