The Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus (SMMC) comprises Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion, Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital and Sharp McDonald Center; the campus is located in Serra Mesa a neighborhood within San Diego.
The Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus in central San Diego is home to an array of comprehensive advanced medical services. Sharp Memorial Hospital and Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns are both MAGNET®-designated hospitals for nursing excellence. Sharp Memorial Hospital  is also designated as a Person-Centered Hospital by Planetree, an organization committed to personalizing, humanizing, and demystifying the hospital experience for patients and their families.
Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus Entities:
Sharp Memorial Hospital: Services include cardiac, cancer and pulmonary care, rehab and women's programs.
Services include labor and delivery, perinatal care for high-risk pregnancies and women's medical services.
Sharp Memorial Outpatient Pavilion: The OPP combines outpatient surgery and medical services, health screening, education and health resource services
Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital: Services focus on psychiatric and chemical dependency programs
(formerly Sharp Vista Pacifica): Sole service is chemical dependency recovery.
Summary:
The Director of Quality and Patient Safety is responsible for providing the oversight, direction, coordination and integration of quality and patient safety; for contributing to the strategic planning for the hospital to achieve the SHC vision; for executing entity strategic plans, and for partnering with executives, directors and department leaders in continuously improving clinical outcomes and reducing risk. This position is also responsible for the effectiveness and efficiency of: adverse event reporting and risk reduction, physician peer review, clinical analytics, data management and report distribution.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Five (5) years’ experience in leadership role, demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate, facilitate, and negotiate effectively with a wide variety of hospital personnel and outside agencies
  • Clinical background is required.
  • Knowledge of governmental and regulatory agencies as it relates to quality and patient safety requirements, including: CMS, TJC, CDPH and Title 22, NQF, and other external agency requirements.
  • Demonstrates Proficiency Level 2 of NAHQ Healthcare Quality Professional Competencies
  • Five years’ experience in performance improvement preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Cerner EHR, Crimson Continuum of Care, and other computer applications.
  • Creative and innovative skill set as it relates to performance improvement design.

Education: 

Masters in healthcare related field required.

Licensure:

Clinical licensure such as RN, Pharm, or RCP preferred.

Certification:

CPHQ, CPPS, ASHRM certification preferred.

 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Experienced in successfully driving widespread organizational change
  • Supports the entity’s performance improvement program and patient safety culture in part by positioning the Quality Department to be a critical and central element to strategic planning and program development under the Quality Pillar.
  • In conjunction with Clinical Effectiveness and entity administration, set short and long term goals for quality improvement, patient safety, and pro-active reduction of risk.
  • Oversees the data collection analysis and reporting processes related to performance improvement, patient safety, and risk reduction, to the Board, MEC, Administration, Management and all appropriate staff to facilitate improvements and safety of all key processes.
  • Facilitates the use of statistical process tools, process improvement and problem solving through Six Sigma methodology for continuous improvement and all care and services provided.
  • Oversees the integration of performance improvement processes with medical staff leadership to review and improve overall patient care outcomes and the peer review process.
  • Leads the strategic initiatives and facilitates proactive risk reduction/patient safety activities and follow-up on all near misses and/or untoward patient care outcomes.
  • Provides direction for the Quality Department in support of the achievement of departmental and organization goals and objectives.
  • Develops systems to collect, measure, and report performance improvement results.
  • In collaboration with the Patient Safety Officer and the patient safety committees oversees and facilitates patient safety initiatives. Leads collaborative partnerships among Nursing, Lean Six Sigma, Care Management, Home Health, Rehab, Medical Staff, Information Technology, etc. to support a caring, safe and effective care.

 

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Must be results and outcomes oriented.
  • Performs under minimal supervision with accountability for specific goals/objectives.
  • Proficient in Lean Six Sigma and Change Management tools and techniques.
  • Demonstrated management and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate, facilitate, and negotiate effectively with a wide variety of hospital personnel.

 

Compensation and Benefits:

The position provides a very competitive compensation, including opportunity to participate in a management incentive program along with a generous benefit package.

 

Physical Requirements:

Walk, sit, talk or hear at least 50% of time. Lift up to 25 lbs.
