This position will support Sharp Memorial Hospital (Outpatient Pavilion), Sharp Grossmont Hospital and Sharp Chula Vista.
8-hour shift: Variable hours
Required Skills and Qualifications
Master of Science or Master of Arts in Genetic Counseling conferred by a Genetic Counseling program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
Valid Genetic Counselor license issued by the State of California
Board eligible or Board Certified by the American Board of Medical Genetics (ABMG) or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC)
Clinical experience in genetic counseling for cancer susceptibility
The Genetic Counselor works as a collaborative member of the oncology healthcare team to provide information and support to families who have members affected with familial cancers, are themselves affected with familial cancers or who may be at risk for familial cancer. Responsibilities of the Genetic Counselor includes identifying families at risk, investigating disease present in the family, interpreting and communicating information about the disorder, and analyzing inheritance patterns and risks of recurrence. The Genetic Counselor will provide supportive counseling to families, serve as a patient advocate and refer individuals to community and state supportive services. The role also includes serving as an educator and resource for other healthcare professionals and for the general public. The Genetic Counselor will be a participant in research activities related to the field of medical oncology genetics and genetic counseling.
This position is a member of the system-wide Oncology Service Line and reports to the VP, Oncology. The oncology service line provides system support for cancer registry services, strategic planning, program development and accreditation, quality and performance improvement, and clinical support for cancer risk counseling and genetics.
Sharp System Services have campuses located in the communities of Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa and consist of the Spectrum location, the Ruffin Road location and Sharp Operations Center (SOC). These offices provide the centralized integrated system support services to the operating entities within the system.
