The Payroll Manager will provide effective on-site management of the Payroll Department, by handling customer and staff issues, appropriate to the level of authority delegated by the System Director.Maintain regular communication with the System Director to ensure the quality, quantity and timeliness of the department’s services, including the administration of the executive payroll, and recommend appropriate action when backlog or performance issues develop.


  • Provide effective leadership of the Payroll personnel, including proper motivation of staff, ensuring optimum levels of productivity, re-engineer workloads, etc. Plan, organize and supervise the activities of the Payroll Technical Analyst I, Lead Payroll Specialist, and Payroll Specialists. Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, distribution of paychecks, labor reports, and the processing of adjustments or corrections to paychecks and pay records.Ensure that the Payroll Specialists adhere to payroll Policies and Procedures while incorporating the Sharp Behavior Standards in their dealings with customers.Work effectively with Payroll Specialists regarding issues raised by other departments.

  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of the executive payroll. Prepare and maintain the yearly Executive Benefit Excel files and update changes and additions into the Lawson System. Prepare appropriate reporting for the Escheatment process.Ensure timely and accurate tax filings and mailings of W2’s.Maintain department’s productivity statistics.

  • Demonstrate effective customer relations by responding appropriately to needs and dissatisfactions expressed by customers, within a time frame appropriate to the request.Communicate in a professional manner with management, department personnel and other Sharp employees using non-technical language that the customer understands.

  • Assist the System Director to effectively work with other departments of Sharp Healthcare, such as Human Resources Division, on payroll issues and practices, including compensation and benefit programs. Recommend new and/or revised department Policies and Procedures as appropriate.Serve on various committees and task forces as requested.

  • Demonstrate dependability,safety, efficiency and teamwork by: completing assigned duties in a safe, cost effective manner and ensuring the safety of employees.Effectively prioritizing workload to meet required deadlines and setting work goals and objectives in consultation with the System Director.Hiring of Lead Payroll Specialist, Payroll Technical Analyst I, and Payroll Specialists.Provide effective and timely training to all Payroll personnel.Offer on-going training for the Payroll Specialists, management and their employees, regarding payroll processing according to Wage and Hour Guidelines. Maintaining confidentiality of information.Cooperatively trouble-shooting potential and actual problems.Share available resources and information to improve processes whenever feasible.

  • Maintain proper control and security relative to the payroll system (i.e., payroll system access, payroll check inventory, access to hard copy records/information in the form of paper, electronic and microfiche).Conduct inventory of payroll supply items and approve timely ordering of such items as appropriate.Review and approve Accounts Payable check requests and bi-weekly tax transmittal requests for all entity payrolls.Assist System Director in preparation of operating budget by providing statistics & other department expense analysis.Assist System Director in controlling operating and capital budget within approved limits.

The Payroll division provides payroll services for the Sharp System. Payroll is responsible for the computation and preparation of accurate and timely paychecks, customer service, maintenance of PTO and ESI accounts, wage attachments, maintaining labor corrections, collecting employee benefit deductions and all other deductions including taxes, and W2 preparation.

Payroll is responsible for ensuring compliance with State and Federal agencies in regards to paychecks as well as ensuring pay practices remain within compliance of the Fair Labor Standards Act, State Labor Board and Sharp's compensation and benefit programs. Payroll ensures timely deposits to employees TSA and Sharp Saver plans. Payroll is also responsible for external and internal reporting, including state and federal tax filings. Sharp's Payroll team continually works in maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of each employee's personal and payroll information.

Sharp System Services have campuses located in the communities of Kearny Mesa and Serra Mesa and consist of the Spectrum location, the Ruffin Road location and Sharp Operations Center (SOC). These offices provide the centralized integrated system support services to the operating entities within the system. These services include: Strategic Planning, Business Development, Information Technology, Compliance, Internal Audit, Legal, Risk Management and Insurance, Contracts, Human Resources, Facilities Management and Development, Clinical Effectiveness, Finance, Nursing, Systems Supply Chain Services, Marketing and Communications, The Sharp Experience and Sharp University.

This position is located in Kearny Mesa, San Diego County



8 hours day shift. 


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Minimum of Three  (3) years payroll experience, preferably in a multi-entity environment
  • Previous successful experience as a supervisor over a staff of at least six is required.  It is kindly encouraged that, in your cover letter, you please include information regarding both your payroll leadership experience and your healthcare payroll experience.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) 
  • Experience working in a healthcare setting
  • Previous experience preparing payroll tax filings
  • Experience with electronic time and attendance system and an in-house payroll system
