The Occupational Therapist II – NICU will evaluate and treat premature and high risk infants in the NICU and newborn care with a variety of diagnoses including feeding and swallowing difficulties, congenital, genetic and neurological disorders. Strong clinical skills in infant neuro-motor, feeding and swallowing, sensorimotor and developmental assessment and treatment along with excellent communication skills are essential for working collaboratively with the entire multidisciplinary team (including nurses, physicians and nurse practitioners, respiratory and physical therapists, lactation specialists, nutritionists, discharge planners and social workers) as well as with families from diverse cultural backgrounds. The therapist will have opportunities to provide teaching for new nursing staff and to participate on NICU multidisciplinary committees including Developmental Care, Neonatal Nutrition, and Unit Practice Council. A strong candidate will demonstrate motivation to seek continued learning via external and internal continuing education. Will provide cooperative and courteous service to internal and external customers as part of Sharp HealthCare's commitment to customer satisfaction.
The Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns (SMBHWN) is 84-beds -- the largest of its kind in Southern California. Technology and innovation are combined with the human touch and family-centered care to give at-risk babies the best start in life. With one of the largest very low birth weight populations in the U.S., the SMBHWN NICU is recognized for its outstanding neonatal outcomes among a database of over 200 hospitals. The NICU’s unique programs include the Neonatal Research Institute and Neurologic Intensive Care. This NICU is a member of the Council of Women’s and Infants Specialty hospital and provides high quality of care, excellent customer service, and great work environment.
Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns is a nationally recognized, full-service Women's Hospital with approximately 8,500 deliveries per year and is part of the Sharp HealthCare system. In 2013 the hospital earned Prominent Designation as a Center of Excellence in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery. Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns provides a full range of medical and surgical services for women of all ages, including robotic gynecologic surgery and oncology and is San Diego's only hospital dedicated to women's care. It is nationally recognized for its care of expectant mothers and delivering babies, as well as its Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – the largest in Southern California. Other services include Operating Room suites and PACU, Mother/Infant Services, Women’s Acute Care, and the Perinatal Special Care Unit with centralized monitoring specializing in high-risk antepartum care
This position is located in the community of Serra Mesa, San Diego County
8 hour shifts; Per Diem position to work Day Shift hours; 8:00 am - 4:30 pm; weekends as needed
- Current California Occupational Therapist licensure
- Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers
- Two or more years of experience in pediatric and neonatal aspects of Occupational Therapy
- CCS Paneling certificate is required within six months of hire
- Must complete Sharp neonatal Training/Competency program
- Graduate of an accredited college or university with a degree in Occupational Therapy
- Advanced Practice Approval – Swallowing Assessment, Evaluation or Intervention required within six month of hire
- Must have a desire to promote the profession of Occupational Therapy and an eagerness to learn through continuing education
