Job Details


The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) is an advanced practice nurse who will provide leadership to promote excellence in nursing practice and patient outcomes.  The CNS is a masters or doctoral prepared RN who applies clinical expertise in evidence-based nursing practice within three spheres of influence; 1) patient/client, 2) nurses/nursing practice, and 3) organization/system in the following roles: clinical expert, educator, researcher, consultant and leader.  The CNS recommends and sets the standard for professional nursing practice, establishes appropriate patient care measures and evaluates outcomes.  The SICU CNS candidate must be proficient in the management of the primary patient populations including cardiac surgery, mechanical assist device and ECMO supported patients.

The CNS acts as a resource to staff nurses to improve the quality of care and promotes a model of nursing care that emphasizes professional role accountability, critical thinking, and collegiality with physicians and other health care professionals.  Responsibilities include providing input to the manager and staff nurses regarding areas for improvement, in clinical practice, designing and/or supporting evidence-based programs and/or processes that improve nursing practice and expanding the practice of nursing through ongoing generation and acquisition of scientific knowledge.  The CNS fosters staff knowledge and skill in research, research utilization, and evidence-based practice and provides leadership as a role model and/or consultant to develop/retain professional nursing staff. The CNS creates an environment that stimulates self-learning and reflective nursing practice, as well as provides direction, oversight and collaboration with nursing and interdisciplinary colleagues (educators, senior specialists, shared decision making councils, etc.) in assessing the educational needs and designing educational programs.

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) at Sharp Memorial Hospital is an intense and fast moving 24-bed unit. Our primary patient populations are cardiac surgical, major trauma and complex general surgical.  We also provide care for a number of patients with a variety of different mechanical assist devices.  We pride ourselves in being the best place to work, for patients to receive care and for physicians to bring their patients.  The SICU achieved “Gold Beacon” status which is a designation conferred by the AACN to ICUs demonstrating clinical excellence.

This position is located in Kearny Mesa, CA (San Diego County)



8-hour shift, primarily day shift, but hours may vary depending on needs of the department; weekends as needed

Full-time (1.0 FTE) exempt position


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Masters or doctoral prepared Registered Nurse
  • Current unencumbered California Registered Nurse license
  • Certification as Clinical Nurse Specialist by California Board of Registered Nursing
  • Current BLS certification for Healthcare Providers
  • Clinical expertise in theory and/or research based nursing practice within a specialty area (SICU - including patient populations including cardiac surgery, mechanical assist device and ECMO supported patients)) that functions in the following roles:  leader, consultant, mentor and change agent


Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • 1 to 2 years’ experience as a CNS
  • Specialty certification
  • Ability to work independently and interact with a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals
  • Successful project management and computer skills
  • Attention to detail and excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability to lead change and influence others
