What You Will Do
The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence (WOC) Specialist is a bachelors prepared nurse who applies clinical expertise in evidence-based nursing practice within a specialty area and functions in the following roles: clinical expert, educator, researcher, and consultant. Leadership skills (system thinker and change agent) are role assumptions.
The WOC Specialist collaborates with a medical team of intensivists, hospitalists, infectious disease, emergency department physicians and other health team members to ensure maintenance of wounds, skin related issues, and continuity of care.
The WOC Specialist provides direct and indirect nursing services to patients and families. Assists inpatient and outpatient physicians in managing the care of wounds and skin related issues for patients at Sharp Coronado Hospital and Healthcare Center. Performs inpatient extended role procedures as defined by Standardized Procedures to facilitate the timely and appropriate care process of skin related issues. Collaboratively sets parameters and guidelines for continuum of care with the multidisciplinary team. Recommends and coordinates follow-up, consults, and referrals. Educates patients and families care of skin related issues. Participates in continuing education programs, current literature reviews to maintain and upgrade skills and knowledge. Participates in quality improvement programs and utilization management.
The WOC Specialist is part of the Wound Healing department with Sharp Coronado Hospital and Health. The Wound Healing department at Sharp Coronado was developed in 1996 and is unique in that it serves inpatient, long-term and outpatient populations. The Wound Healing department functions in a collaborative fashion with primary care providers and referring physicians for consultations and ongoing care through the development and implementation of individualized patient-centered treatment plans.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Graduate of accredited WOC Nurse education program.
- 2 Years Recent pertinent clinical experience as defined by the CBA.
- 3 Years Nursing experience.
- Certified Wound Ostomy Continence Nurse (CWOCN) - The Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB)
- AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association
- California Registered Nurse (RN) - CA Board of Registered Nursing
- 1 Year Recent home health.
- 2 Years Acute care experience.
- 1 Year Certified WOCN experience.
- Proficient in computer skills such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel
