$117.779 - $151.973 - $186.167


The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.


What You Will Do

As an executive leader in the Sharp Community Medical Group (SCMG) MSO and SharpCare foundation divisions, the Chief Financial and Growth Officer works with executive leadership teams throughout Sharp HealthCare, executive physician leadership teams at various entities and key stakeholders to develop and implement financial, business, and operational strategies to improve Sharp HealthCare's service to independent physicians and those working in the SharpCare foundation.

The position will lead the development of new strategic business models for the SCMG MSO division, in support of growing Sharp HealthCare's connection with the independent physician community. In collaboration with the executive leadership team of SCMG MSO, SCMG, and Sharp HealthCare, the position leads all aspects of business growth including the creation of organizational structures, financial analysis and proformas, all business valuations for any planned acquisitions and the startup of new business model(s) from incorporation to beginning of operations.

The position will lead the growth and development of SharpCare medical foundation clinics in support of Sharp HealthCare's vision of providing community based primary clinics throughout San Diego County. The position will work with executive leadership teams, physicians, and key stakeholders to develop and implement financial strategies and overall business strategies to improve SharpCare's competitive position and ensure alignment with the overall mission, vision, and value of Sharp HealthCare.

The position is also responsible for providing financial oversight and direction to all aspects of the SCMG MSO, SharpCare, and other new businesses established. The position works collaboratively with all executive leadership on integrated financial planning and reporting, long range planning, and enterprise financial planning and analysis. The CFO/GO will manage the development, interpretation, coordination and administration of the operating entity finance and operational divisions to establish financial reporting processes to support the entities.

The CFO/GO will recommend and consult with Executive leadership and the System EVP and Chief Financial Officer regarding financial priorities, compliance activities, budget planning process and guidelines, and manage the coordination of all entity specific financial reports. The CFO/GO will work with the System EVP and chief financial officer on policies and procedures consistent with the principles of effective financial management and ensure financial issues are in alignment with the overall business objectives of the Sharp HealthCare system. The CFO/GO will also lead and coordinate external financial audits of the entities managed by SCMG and ensure financial statements are prepared in accordance with GAAP.

In the role of CFO/GO SCMG the position has a strong indirect reporting relationship to the System SVP of Business Development and is responsible for strategic business development and execution of market growth and improvement strategies through collaboration with the System SVP of Business Development and System Chief Marketing Officer.

Additionally, the CFO/GO SCMG will be responsible for the advancement of business development across SCMG's network including program development and service line growth, and data driven analytics.

This position is accountable for the planning, organization, and direction of financial services, as well as development, execution and reporting of growth and financial improvement strategies. In collaboration with System Finance, key responsibilities include:

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in financial management, business administration and/or accounting.
  • 5 years management experience.
  • 8 years Finance/Business experience.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in business administration or healthcare related field.


Essential Functions

  • QUALITY
    Provides financial expertise to the Executive Leadership teams and Physician governance organizations and provides recommendations and consultative guidance and direction in the development of financial proposals and program reviews.
    Effectively consults with the Executive Leadership teams and, where appropriate, System EVP and Chief Operating Officer and System EVP and Chief Financial Officer on all financial and budgetary concerns.
    Supports clinical resource management and alignment between cost and quality through accurate reporting and interpretation of cost and quality data. Leads the team responsible for creation of credible data for utilization, cost, and quality to facilitate informed decision making for the operating entities.
    Negotiates and develops all operating entity specific contracts including but not limited to purchased services, and physician agreements. Works in collaboration with entity executive leadership and System VP of Contracts on negotiation of entity payer agreements.
    Provides financial expertise in the development and analysis of all entity business development opportunities. Leads complex financial analysis on all business development opportunities and summarizes results for operating entity governing board.
  • SERVICE
    Provides exceptional customer service to all levels within and outside the organization.
    Supports and promotes employee, physician, and patient satisfaction initiatives.
    Is instrumental in helping to create the unique patient, family, physician, and team member experience of the medical offices managed by the SCMG MSO and SharpCare clinics. Manages the coordination of all divisional processes demonstrating excellence in patient satisfaction through thorough knowledge of the Press Ganey database and website.
    Rounds consistently, establishes visible presence in the clinics among staff and physicians, and solicits feedback regarding performance, resource needs, etc.
    Assures high physician opinion scores.
    Provides and maintains effective communication with medical staff, patients, and the community related to division’s clinical functions.
    Addresses issues identified via various customer satisfaction vehicles, creates action plans around findings, and demonstrates continued improvement in satisfaction of all groups served.
  • FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT
    Serves as primary entity financial executive for all entities being managed, including leading physician group governance meetings and Finance Committee(s).
    Develops short- and long-term financial goals and objectives with operating entity Executive Leadership and management to ensure the success of each operating entity.
    Plans, directs, and overseas the financial planning, budgeting, and forecasting activities of the operating entities being managed.
    Leads the planning and resource allocation processes that result in the development and administration of the operating entities annual and five year operating and capital budgets.
    Analyze financial details of past, present, and expected operations in order to identify development opportunities in areas where improvement is needed.
    Provides financial expertise, recommendations, and consultive guidance and direction in the development of financial proposals and program reviews.
    Provides and interprets detailed service line and physician utilization reports to identify opportunities for improvement.
    Directs and participates in a variety of reports and studies on complex financial analysis, organizational and administrative initiatives. Provides and interprets financial data for operating entity leadership and physician board for resource utilization, cost and labor management.
    Effectively consults with the operating entities executive leadership teams on all financial and budgetary concerns.
    Facilitates financial planning efforts for assigned areas, focusing on effective translation of strategy into financial objectives and specific, measurable goals with associated deliverables consistent and in support of the MSO operating entities goals.
    Directs preparation of all entity Board financial related reports including financial statements, investment performance, budgets, capital plans, productivity performance. Prepares reports summarizing complex financial transactions for Board/Finance Committee(s) discussion.
    Leads and directs entity financial and tax audits ensuring statements are compliant with all regulatory standards.
    Manages relationship with investment management company to ensure operating entities investments are maintained in compliance with entity policies. Advises operating entities on investment management decisions to ensure maximum return to the operating entity.
    Provides communication and information to the System EVP and Chief Operating Officer and the System EVP and Chief Financial Officer.
    Directs and maintains entity operating and capital expenses within allocated budgets.
    Directs improvements in the revenue cycle, eliminating waste and increasing productivity.
    Develops, analyzes, and formulates recommendations for policy and procedural changes.
  • GROWTH
    Responsible for the growth and expansion of new practice models to support independent physician practices supporting communities throughout Sharp HealthCare’s service area.
    Leads Executive and Physician Leadership in support of new creative opportunities to grow primary and specialty care physicians into the community.
    Responsible for full continuum of due diligence work in any practice acquisitions, including the coordination and management of third-party valuation firm(s) to secure fair and reasonable financial transactions.
    Works with appropriate legal counsel to create legal structure of new entity(s) being created. Leads all aspects of legal agreements needed to purchase existing practices into new entity(s)
    Leads the establishment of all operational structures needed for the successful operations of new entity(s).
    Identifies and assesses the feasibility of future innovative strategies for the long-term success of the MSO division and its relationship with independent physicians.
    Working closely with System EVP and Chief Operations Officer and System EVP and Chief Financial Officer evaluates opportunity for expansion and role of SharpCare clinics as a viable practice of the community and in conjunction with the long-range objectives of Sharp HealthCare.
    Determines direction, goals, and objectives of assigned areas and ensures implementation of strategic and operating plans and tactics. Directs the development of short and long-range plans and budgets.
  • OPERATIONS/PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
    Ensures the delivery of quality health care services exceeding patients' expectations in a cost effective and accessible manner.
    Establishes and achieves financial goals and measures in responsible areas, monitors financial performance, and ensures on-going financial success for the MSO division, MSO division clients and SharpCare clinics including EBITDA, operating profit, and net revenue.
    Ensures and directs the preparation of financial analysis, reporting and reviews to determine cost effectiveness of new (proposed) and/or existing programs.
  • PEOPLE

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge and demonstrated skills of financial management of operating entity and/or healthcare delivery systems to include financial reporting, operating entity accounting, budgeting and planning systems, productivity monitoring, cost reimbursement, financial investment planning, and customer service orientation.
  • Must possess understanding of financial audit requirements, investment management portfolio concepts and strategies for short and long term gain to operating entity, and financial regulatory reporting requirements for entity(ies).
  • The incumbent must possess the skills to effectively manage complex financial consolidation transactions, and thus exhibit effective written and oral communication skills, excellent organizational, project management and leadership skills with a demonstrated track record in effectively developing, interfacing and building collaborative relationships with healthcare/operating entity leadership, executives, physicians and other key business partners.
  • The ability to exercise sound judgment on operational as well as financial decisions affecting the operating entity(ies) of the highest quality is required.
  • Must have excellent communication skills with peers, physicians and other hospital staff, be an effective spokesperson for multiple groups of individuals, and be able to work under pressure and remain flexible with conflicting priorities.
