What You Will Do
Performs individualized nursing care for patients/families under the direction of an RN. Uses and practices basic assessment data collection, participates in planning, executes interventions in accordance with the Plan Of Care and contributes to evaluation of outcomes. Communicates to ensure patient/family educated Plan Of Care and planned treatments.

Required Qualifications

  • AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Professional (AHA BLS Healthcare) - American Heart Association -REQUIRED
  • California Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN) - CA Board of Vocational Nursing & Psychiatric Technicians -REQUIRED


Preferred Qualifications

  • 1 Year LVN experience in an acute care setting or related area.
  • Experience in the respective department.
  • Vocational Nurse IV Therapy/Blood Withdrawal Certification - Various-Employee provides certificate -PREFERRED

Sharp Mesa Vista – Adult Locked Unit

  • Purpose of Unit: Our North Rotunda (NR) is a locked unit, which provides care for a small number of patients at one time, allowing for focused and personalized interaction. Nurses are present 24 hours a day and staff members round continuously with patients to ensure safety for everyone. We offer daily therapy groups that incorporate themes from our hospital-wide Recovery Action Plan workbook, including psychology, recreational therapy, medication education and nutrition. We strongly encourage group participation to facilitate a successful recovery.
  • Top 5 Diagnoses: Acute Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Status Post Suicide Attempt, Major Depressive Disorder
  • Point of Entry: Patients are directly admitted either voluntarily or on an involuntary legal hold.  They come from across San Diego County as walk in patients, through doctor’s offices/clinics, emergency departments, PERT, and medical floors after stabilization of medical needs.
  • Average Daily Census: Up to 11 in our temporary unit, 13 when not under construction

Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital – Intensive Treatment Program (ITP/EW1)

  • Purpose (of unit):  East Wing 1 (EW1), also known as the “Intensive Treatment Program” (ITP) is a locked unit where patients experiencing mood instability, suicidal thoughts, urges to harm themselves, and/or hallucinations, have the opportunity to attend and participate in milieu, group, and individual therapy in a safe environment with support from peers and staff. Groups are offered throughout the day, including psychology, recreational, art, pet, spirituality, and social interaction therapy aimed at helping patients learn positive coping skills and resiliency.
  • Top 5 Diagnoses:  Acute Psychosis, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Status Post Suicide Attempt, Major Depressive Disorder
  • Average Daily Census: Up to 25

Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital – Child and Adolescent Program (CAP3)

  • Purpose (of unit):  On CAP3, we aim to provide a safe space where children and teens experiencing mood instability, suicidal thoughts, hallucinations, substance use, or urges to harm themselves receive treatment. During their stay, patients work with a dedicated social worker, nurse, and primary psychiatrist. We design a treatment plan based on individual needs. Our typical length of stay is three to five days.  We utilize a variety of treatment resources, such as cognitive, behavioral, and recreational therapies, to help facilitate recovery. We provide group-based therapy as well as individual and caregiver-based support, including assistance in planning care after the hospitalization.
  • Top 5 Diagnoses:  This population often has working diagnoses; thus, we are treating symptoms rather than a diagnosis.
  • Point of Entry: Patients are directly admitted either voluntarily or on an involuntary legal hold.  They come from across San Diego County as walk-in patients through doctor’s offices/clinics, emergency departments, PERT, and medical floors after stabilization of medical needs.
  • Average Daily Census: Up to 12 in our temporary unit and up to 23 in the usual space when not under

Sharp Mesa Vista – Senior Behavioral Unit

  • Purpose of Unit: Sharp Mesa Vistas Senior Behavioral Unit(SBU) provides treatment for adults age 60 and older to address a range of issues, including dementia, mood disorders and other severe mental health concerns. The program is staffed by a skilled and caring treatment team specializing in geriatric psychiatry and addictions medicine. And our Senior Behavioral Health Unit provides compassionate, specialized care for seniors.
  • Top 5 Diagnoses: Dementia, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Status Post Suicide Attempt, Major Depressive Disorder
  • Point of Entry: Patients are directly admitted either voluntarily or on an involuntary legal hold.  They come from across San Diego County as walk in patients, through doctor’s offices/clinics, emergency departments, and medical floors after stabilization of medical needs.
  • Average Daily Census: Up to 19

Sharp Mesa Vista – Chemical Dependency Detox Rehabilitation Program

  • Purpose of Unit: East Wing 2 and Chemical Dependency Recovery Program are temporarily a combined unit, sharing a physical space.  EW2/CDRP is a cognitive behavioral therapy unit for patients electing voluntary treatment of mood instability or chemical dependency. It is our mission to provide quality care and compassion by incorporating the principles of recovery in a safe and healing environment.  While here, patients attend therapeutic activities in a safe environment with support from peers and staff. Therapy groups aimed at helping patients apply the principles of recovery are offered throughout the day. The specialized groups are led by psychologists, recreational therapists, pharmacists, chemical dependency counselors and nursing staff.
  • Top 5 Diagnoses: Major Depressive Disorder, Chemical Dependency/Detox
  • Point of Entry: Patients are admitted voluntarily as a walk in or by appointment through our intake department.
  • Average Daily Census: Up to 32 combined beds

Program Overview:

Essential Functions

  • Assessment data
    Collects assessment data (using observation, palpation and auscultation per Practice Act) per department guidelines of care, including age/cultural specific considerations.
    Documents data collected.
    Communicates/contributes data collected to RN for analysis and interpretation.
  • Communication and coordination
    Communicates with other healthcare team members to coordinate patient care activities, workflow, and patient progress.
    Follows through with identified actions/referrals.
    Coordinates schedules and patient care needs with RN and other staff to ensure continuity and frequency of visits.
  • Documentation
    Communicates patient and family care needs through documentation.
    Documentation per department/entity guideline of care and policies and procedures.
  • Implements plan of care
    Implements plan of care per department guidelines: Refers practices outside of scope to RN.
    Seeks out resources when appropriate in new situations.
    Collaborates with RNs when nursing decisions required in implementation of the plan of care in accordance with compliance and scope of practice.
  • Informal teaching
    Gives constructive feedback to peers regarding work performance and notifies supervisor of suspected performance issues.
    Provides unit specific information to students, floats, travelers/registry personnel and documents appropriately.
    Documents informal teaching.
  • Patient advocate
    Encourage patient and family participation in decision making.
    Acts to uphold individual/family rights.
  • Patient and family education
    Identifies learning needs including barriers/readiness.
    Recognizes barriers to communication with patient and family and seeks interdisciplinary expertise to establish a therapeutic relationship.
    Collaborates with the RN in development of individualized teaching plan.
    Implements plan of care (IPOC & IPER) using appropriate resources.
    Collects data indicative of patient/family learning in response to teaching plan.
    Collaborates with RN in evaluates patient/family learning through use of adult-learning theory and revises plan as appropriate. (e.g. documented in IPER, IPOC, discharge teaching, etc.)
  • Plan of care
    Demonstrates understanding of patient/family goals.
    Makes recommendations to the multidisciplinary team in development of the patient's plan of care.
    Updates written plan of care (IPOC) per direction of RN.
  • Supports evaluation care plan
    Collects data indicative of patient/family response to care per department guidelines.
    Reports data/information to team members in determining the need to alter goals and interventions.
    Contributes observations and data to patient care conferences.
    Documents patients' response to care.
