Our PGY2 Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency Program is a comprehensive program, based at Sharp Grossmont Hospital with additional learning experiences at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital. The PGY2 Resident will have an opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience in interdisciplinary team-based care, in multiple diverse patient care settings. Residents will also be given the flexibility to personalize the residency experience to meet their career goals.
The program is currently in ASHP pre-candidate status.
Sharp Grossmont Hospital is a 562-bed facility and the home site for the PGY2. It is located in East San Diego County. It is the largest not-for-profit, full-service acute care hospital in the region and has been recognized as a Magnet® and Planetree® hospital for nursing and patient care excellence. Sharp Grossmont Hospital provides a range of comprehensive behavioral health services such as inpatient programs, intensive outpatient treatment programs, emergency and observation services, cognitive behavioral health therapy, substance use disorder and dual recovery treatment, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital is a 149-bed facility that provides exceptional care through treatments and programs for a wide variety of age groups. The hospital is the largest privately operated psychiatric hospital and a leading provider of behavioral health care in San Diego County, known for its comprehensive approach to mental health treatment. The hospital offers inpatient, outpatient and partial hospitalization programs, including detoxification and rehabilitation services, with additional outpatient services serving children, teens and adults. Empowering patients is the cornerstone of their healing philosophy.
About the program
Joseph Martino, PharmD, BCCCP, is the Residency Program Director.
This PGY2 residency program will train pharmacists in interdisciplinary, behavioral health practice with a focus on the inpatient setting. Our resident will be joining a well-established and highly valued pharmacy team who consistently make a positive impact on the lives of our patients.
The PGY2 pharmacy resident will receive training to accelerate growth and competence in patient care, leadership, teaching, research and practice management skills through precepting pharmacy residents and students, conducting clinical research projects, and assisting in the integration and utilization of clinical pharmacists to improve patient care.
For those interested in further developing their teaching skills, participation in a teaching certificate program is available through the San Diego Pharmacy Residency Leadership Teaching Program.
You will participate in the development of your own residency plan, which will reflect your interests and build upon your previous experiences. Upon successful completion of our program, you will be equipped with the knowledge to become a valuable asset to the pharmacy community.

Additional Activities
- Committees
You will actively participate in committees such as Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Psychiatry Supervisory, Sharp Clinical Pharmacy Practice Council, Sharp Drug Formulary Committee and other supervisory and multidisciplinary committees as appropriate.
- Compensation
Your annual base stipend will be an estimate of $67,122 plus benefits. We coordinate with pharmacy managers to tailor all staffing to the needs of the residency program and the pharmacy department. Additional financial support for educational opportunities may be available. If there's a need we'll help provide financial support for approved educational opportunities.
- Educational opportunities
We'll provide you with ongoing educational opportunities through professional meetings and conferences (ASHP Midyear, AAPP Annual Meeting). Sharp also provides continuing pharmacy education and Six Sigma White and Yellow Belt certification opportunities.
- Presentations
Throughout the year, we provide numerous opportunities for our residents to present to medical and nursing staff, pharmacy students and pharmacy staff, in addition to the required rotational and formal seminar presentations.
- Projects
You will collaborate with system and site pharmacy leadership, your residency project preceptor and a co-investigator to develop a high-priority project aligned with your area of interest and Sharp’s strategic needs. You will complete an in-depth, systematic study suitable for publication and presentation that will help shape institutional clinical practice. Additional projects may be completed based on resident interest, departmental priorities, and opportunities that support both professional development and Sharp HealthCare.
- Teaching
At Sharp, teaching is integrated into patient care. Residents actively participate in educating pharmacy students, pharmacy staff, and interdisciplinary team members, including nursing and medical staff. As a resident, you will work closely with pharmacist preceptors to support clinical learning experiences for pharmacy students from various colleges of pharmacy — including Creighton University, Keck Graduate Institute, Touro University, University of California at Irvine, University of California at San Diego, University of Pacific, University of Southern California and Western University. Additionally, residents will have the opportunity to participate in the San Diego Pharmacy Residency Leadership Program to earn a teaching certificate, if not already completed during PGY1 training gaining advanced experience in precepting, educator development, and high‑impact teaching workshops.
