Hourly Pay Range (Minimum - Midpoint - Maximum):

$39.231 - $50.621 - $62.011


The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position.  The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.



What You Will Do
Provide spiritual care and spiritual counseling services for patients, families and team members of Sharp HealthCare that respects diversity and differences including, but not limited to culture, gender expressions, sexual orientation and spiritual/religious practices. Provides on-call services as needed. If position is for Sharp Memorial, incumbent provides spiritual care support to all of Sharp Metropolitan Medical Campus. This includes Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women and Newborns, and Sharp Mesa Vista.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Other Successful completion of at least 4 units of ACPE Clinical Pastoral Education. (Hospice requirement 1 unit of CPE).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree of Divinity or related field (equivalent needed for Board Certification by endorsing faith group).
  • 1 Year Experience as a healthcare chaplain.
  • Experience in acute care hospital.

Other Qualification Requirements
  • Strongly prefer Board Certification by either APC or NACC, or at least be eligible and in active process of obtaining this certification required.

Essential Functions
  • Assessments
    Assess, formulate, and utilize spiritual assessments, interventions, outcomes and care plans in order to contribute effectively to the well-being of the person receiving care. This assessment is to be completed and documented within the chaplain’s shift. (Hospice-within 5 days)
  • Clinical skills
    Responsible for the delivery of individual and group spiritual care for patients, families, and staff in clinically designated areas.
    Provide crisis intervention as necessary in a timely manner (hospital setting this may include Code Blue and trauma code).
    Helps patients, families, and staff address bioethical issues, organ donation, preparation of advance healthcare directives, and facilitates treatment decisions based on patient values.
    Provides appropriate rituals/services for patient and family that include rituals for the newborn (hospital only), end of life rituals, memorial services, and other rituals that serve to celebrate, comfort and encourage staff.
  • Caseload
    Sets daily priorities for the shift and revises schedule based on patient/family needs.
    Communicates these priorities with the appropriate spiritual care staff.
    Visit frequencies are established for ongoing patient care with specific timeframes identified.
  • Customer Service
    Consistently communicates in a positive and timely manner with staff members, Sharp employees, physicians, patients and visitors.
    Maintains positive relationships with community clergy, CPE students and volunteers. This may include providing orientation, scheduling and direct supervision of volunteers.
    Handles problems in a professional and proactive manner.
  • Documentation
    Responsible for documenting all spiritual care visits in the appropriate EMR and other documentation required by the department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a collegial department, and multidisciplinary setting.
  • Excellent clinical skills and proven ability to effectively minister with persons of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds.
  • Excellent teaching skills that may involve in-services, presentations, and other work.
  • Ability to initiate new programs, as well organize and oversee existing ones.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, Microsoft Office applications, and electronic medical record.
  • Basic understanding of medical terms and diagnosis.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
