$67.070 - $86.540 - $96.930The stated pay scale reflects the range that Sharp reasonably expects to pay for this position. The actual pay rate and pay grade for this position will be dependent on a variety of factors, including an applicant’s years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, other requirements for the position, and employer business practices.
What You Will Do
The Six Sigma Black Belt implements Lean Six Sigma philosophy and methodology through the management of performance improvement projects selected by appropriate governing councils. This position manages Six Sigma projects ensuring timelines, milestones and deadlines are organized, coordinated and met. Ensures that the business case for each project is solid and based on appropriate, clear measures and includes clear goals. Incorporates appropriate change management strategies and tools into project management. Facilitates team meetings effectively and productively. Uses rigorous data collection and analysis to guide effective team decision-making. Scientifically tests solutions then selects and hardwires the best solutions that eliminate waste and improve efficiency and quality/financial results. Incorporates a long-term control plan to sustain results. Prepares and delivers reports/presentations at key intervals throughout the project. Obtains project sponsor approval at each milestone and at project closure/handoff.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in an applicable field such as Management, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Finance, Engineering, Business Administration, Nursing or Health Care Administration.
- Other Lean Six Sigma Black Belt training.
- 7 Years Documented experience in a related Quality Improvement role.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree Healthcare or related field.
- Other Six Sigma/Lean training and certification by recognized authority.
- 10 Years Experience in a health system or related field, including supervisory, project management or managerial responsibilities in conjunction with process analysis and work re-design activities.
- Experience within the state of California or a state with similar issues.
- Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB) - American Society for Quality -PREFERRED

- Change management
Understands and applies techniques/tools for managing organizational change using change acceleration process including identifying appropriate leaders, creating a shared need, shaping a vision, mobilizing commitment, monitoring progress and anchoring the changes.

Uses effective and appropriate communication techniques for different situations to overcome organizational barriers to success.
Participates in developing change management training and tools in support of Sharp HealthCare’s Office of Transformation. - Focus on measurement results
Participates and provides performance improvement facilitator/project manager expert recommendations on metrics and program measurements to support Sharp HealthCare’s Office of Transformation.
Selects the appropriate metrics for projects and applies measurement systems analysis to determine and ensure accurate measurement of causes and effects.
Maintains primary focus of meeting the goals identified in the business case of the project.
Understands, applies and presents advanced financial analysis such as ROI, NPV. Conducts business case analysis and provides recommendations to executive leaders on prioritization of assets, cost saving initiatives, and organizational structure. - Leadership
Mentors (6-8) Six Sigma Green Belts in project management tools / techniques and appropriate data collection and analysis.
Develops and conducts education as needed to accelerate performance improvement initiatives.
Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, professional affiliations, and accrediting organizations to maintain current technical, educational, and political information regarding healthcare.
Develops and leads forum for executives, and front-line leaders to coordinate efforts and cross entity silos to improve continuity of operations and build leader skill sets in support of organizational mission and goals. - Project management
Provides input and recommendations on establishment of new systems and structures for performance improvement project prioritization for the Sharp system in support of the Office of Transformation including system transformation in areas such as productivity, network optimization, home health, length of stay, and avoidable hospitalizations.
Leads and facilitates transformational multi-entity projects in support of the Office of Transformation priorities including projects with significant financial impact.
Provides expert input and team guidance on system operations in a multitude of specialty areas including clinical and business operations.
Serves as a resource to senior leadership to facilitate transformational initiatives that enable achievement of Sharp’s future state.
Identifies national best practices and guides teams in achieving successful outcomes with the goal of enhancing Sharp’s competitive posture.
Develops and facilitates completion of project agreements/contracts with project sponsors and process owners at the beginning of any project, scoping effort or coach/mentor assignment or consultation.
Selects the appropriate metrics for projects and applies measurement systems analysis to determine and ensure accurate measurement of causes and effects.
Manages performance improvement projects using the Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, Control (DMAIC) phases.
Translates customer feedback into strategic project focus areas using Six Sigma tools, and establish key project metrics that relate to the voice of the customer and yield process insights.
Creates and negotiate the project charter with the project sponsor and process owner, including team, scope, resources, metrics, goals, timelines, communication plan, project transition, and project closure.
Develops strong business case by selecting clear and appropriate financial measures (soft and hard); uses basic financial models (e.g., NPV, ROI) to describe, apply, evaluate, and interpret cost of quality concepts, including quality cost categories, data collection, and reporting.
Applies appropriate inferential statistics / hypothesis testing to analyze data in order to find the vital few input and output variables and to focus improvement efforts on solutions that matter most.
Applies basic and advanced 'lean' principles to project management (e.g. '5S', value stream mapping, theory of constraints, kaizen).
Creates data-driven and fact-driven project documentation using project charter, spreadsheets, storyboards, phased reviews, management reviews, presentations to the appropriate teams and councils.
Develops and uses appropriate statistical process control tools to monitor long-term effect of project improvements.
Manages 3-5 concurrent multi-entity project portfolios targeting significant system change.
Manages system change relating regulatory or legal compliance.
Manages a program function such as CEU’s/CME’s; PI Hub; Program Communication; Physician Leadership Academy; other system operational support.
Independently develops curriculum for performance improvement training for employees and physicians.
Leads and facilitates. - Project selection
Participates and provides expert input on development of new tools to support project prioritization and selection in support of the Office of Transformation priorities.
Integrates advanced risk management tools and mitigation plans into projects with significant financial, quality and safety risk for the organization.
Contributes to decisions for selecting Six Sigma projects with appropriate governing councils.
Clarifies roles and responsibilities with potential team members (sponsor, process owner, champion).
Ensures solid linkage of six sigma projects to organizational goals.
Matches the appropriate change vehicle ('Workout', 'Lean Six Sigma' project or basic 'DMAIC' project) to the project. - Team facilitation
Defines, selects, and applies techniques that support and sustain team member participation and commitment (nominal group, brainstorming, etc.)
Applies coaching, mentoring, and facilitation techniques to guide a team and overcome problems.
Works through sponsor and process owner to ensure accountability and effective follow-through of team members in order to achieve project timelines and goals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to effectively work with Sharp management, staff, physicians and contract personnel; to communicate clearly, concisely and accurately with people verbally and in writing; to achieve results for the organization and the project with and through people; to practice good time management; to demonstrate good leadership and project management skills.
- Ability to successfully manage multiple project work teams using applied principles of project and team management.
- Knowledge and experience in utilization of change management theory and practice.
- Strong quantitative, analytical and process redesign skills, along with project management skills will be essential components of this role.
- Ability to instruct and train others in principles used for developing and carrying out plans for better utilization of health care resources.
- Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative analysis principles and practices, including benchmarking, cost benefit analysis, outcomes management and statistics.
- Thorough knowledge of the impact of process analysis and re-design methodologies on legal, ethical, managerial, regulatory and organizational principles and standards for acute general hospitals and health systems.
- Advanced knowledge of performance improvement regulatory requirements for healthcare.
- Advanced knowledge of all systems, structures and programs that support performance improvement (Magnet, Six Sigma, EBP, Research).
- Demonstrates advanced application of data analysis and statistical tools to drive multi-entity and system change.
