Get to know the Sharp team: Meet Eileen Johnson, RN
Having a career with Sharp means learning something new every day. We believe in challenging and inspiring our employees at every step of their career.
Meet Eileen Johnson, an intensive care unit (ICU) nurse, who has worked with the Sharp Memorial Hospital team since 2008.
How would you describe your Sharp team?
Throughout Sharp and the hospital, I’ve never felt more a part of a family.
Every day, when I walk in, the doctors always ask me how I am doing. And they genuinely care about my well-being just as much as they care for the patients. They make me feel a part of the whole process of patient care.
Having the friendships in the hospital and outside of the hospital has been the best part of my Sharp experience. A lot of the nurses, they hike together, they run together, they have beach days and picnics together. The bonding outside of work helps with our day-to-day morale in the hospital.
What do you enjoy most about working at Sharp?
To be a part of a Magnet® hospital means there are so many opportunities to be involved other than just at the bedside as a nurse. You can be on a unit basis counsel or you can be on a hospital bi-based council. You can also become involved in other projects based on your personal interests.
If you have an idea for a patient care board or something to help the family interact with the care of the patient, you can present it to Sharp and they incorporate that into our everyday work life.
How would you describe the Sharp Experience?
If you're coming to Sharp Memorial for the first time, it's a very welcoming environment. The leadership team is very open — they embrace you. They're very helpful. Everyone is very good at guiding you through all the little nooks and crannies or finding your way around the hospital. I think that’s because we're such a close-knit team; no one feels like an outsider.
Daily, I've seen people go above and beyond to help people, whether you're a new nurse, a new grad, a student or a traveler. Everyone is always treated with respect, from leadership on down to the housekeepers.
What would you say is the best part about your career at Sharp?
The leadership team at Sharp Memorial is amazing. I have never worked at any other hospital where management was so interactive. They are more than just management; they will be in the trenches if they need to be.
The doctors are so kind and receptive. They ask us, "What do you think we should do?" and I’ve never really had that at any other hospital I've worked for. They really make you feel that you're an equal. You are a part of the team and that's so appreciated.
